Storage / Windows 11 24H2 Update - SMB f...
Last post by thomasjohnlynch - October 08, 2025, 06:54:24 PM
I have an LS220DB31 and a WD MyCloud as a simple mirrored backup.    If I allow the Windows 11 24H2 update to install I loose access to both of them.  Can't see them or find them etc etc.  I know its some SMB now "unhandment" or security update that I guess Buffalo has never upgraded the firmeware to handle....... and so now even after videos and Microsoft technical papers all blaming the manfucaturers etc etc  I am somehow supposed to play around with the OS or figure out how to override or bypass the SMB calls or something?

Does Buffalo not have a fix for this?   Or at least something I can click in the management software to setup SMB and the storage target properly???

I have spend hours and hours and even an hour plus here searching.....I did find some mapping questions which seem similar??

Help?  (I mean the EASY button help please)  I have been in storage since 180k floppies and MFM hard drive controllers from Xebec and pokeing and peeking on Apples and Commodores.......I don't want to do that crap?

Simple and a few lines please????

Just a heads up for all!

A back-end tool migration and upgrade took place which necessitated an all around upgrade that has not been without problems during busy season!

We are still trying to work out some issues, your experience here will not be without issues until resolved.

Solved Storage Threads / Unable to Map Windows 11 to LS...
Last post by kevinjmaz - October 02, 2025, 07:22:55 PM
I have the LS220D94E at home and at a couple other sites I manage.  I can map all using Windows 11 except my new computer at home. On the NAS Navigator I can see and access the settings from the windows 11 PC but when I try to doubleclick to open the drive nothing happens and if I use NAS Navigator/ Menu/Map Share the error is - Could not map the share. Create a folder named "share" before maping the drive.  this share is already created and being used from the other computers.  SMB is enabled on PC and NAS.  Any ideas to try?

Use Google SMTP server and port settings "smtp.gmail.com:587" and generate an "app password" using the steps below.

ESET Forwarding
Go to your Google Account and choose Security on the left panel.

Select 2-Step verification.

Select "app password", then follow the instructions to enter the App Password.

My NAS 710 has the settings of:

The sender address and Username are the same Gmail account. I do not know why the images are not showing up. You can right click on them and load them in a different tab/window to see them.

Hope it works for you... Took me a long time to get it to work.

Storage / Questions about LS710 and file...
Last post by james301 - October 01, 2025, 01:05:06 AM
Hello, I have a BUFFALO LinkStation 710 NAS. I am working on sorting out my music files. Getting rid of poor quality copies, changing folders, and editing the Metadata. I do this on my PC then I have been using Free File Sync to scan for changed files and copy, move, delete, rename, etc.. the backup on the NAS. I donated to Free Files Sync so I have the paid version which has the ability to use 'parallel file operations'. So far I have found that 3 parallel operations on the NAS drive seems the fastest (for moving and updating files), 6 parallel operations work good for very fast scanning for changed files (@ 180,000 files scanned for changes in less then a min.).
Just by sorting through the files causes the HD on my PC to become fragmented. I can imagine that syncing using 3 parallel operations would cause even more fragmentation on the NAS. (The last time I worked on the files I Changed, deleted, renamed/moved, edited the Metadata of @10 gigs of data. According to the Free File Sync program.) On a side note if you have never heard of Free File Sync I strongly recommend it. IT's FREE or up to you to donate (any amount), very easy to use, and a game changer to update snapshots of folders to your NAS.
https://freefilesync.org/

QUESTIONS:
Dose the LS710 do file defragmentation during maintenance?

Is this even something that I need to worry about?

Can I run some sort of monthly defragment tool?

How do I 'clean things up' like once a year or something like that?

Thanks,
-Jaz

Storage / LS220D - sleep timer not worki...
Last post by doobre - September 20, 2025, 01:11:29 AM
HI there
I have encountered these problems with the above nas, while at the same time the other LS-WXL have had no problems staying connected and switching on/off at set up in the Sleep Management options, for many years.

The reason it seems is that somehow the unit will set it's own time zone to Japan along with the Japan ntp time server and therefore the wrong time for me here in NZ. This seems to happen if it does not start up 'correctly' when manually switched on, after it hasn't started correctly initially.
It then seems to get lost and gets assigned a weird irrelevant IP address (usually the third set of three numbers) eg: 192.168.11.135, and the Nas Navigator message appears something like "would you like to assign the nas an iP automatically or continue with the manual setting". Or around the other way!!
It happens about 3-4 times a year for me.

Hope this may help others to understand whats going on.

Guidelines and more / Re: {Guide}How to wake your NA...
Last post by doobre - September 18, 2025, 07:52:10 PM
Hi there, I know this is an old thread, but did you also find a way to keep the nas awake for the duration of the time you are using your computer?
meaning the stays ON during computer ON time, and the nas turns OFF when the computer is turned OFF.

Like with the windows service does in Win10, keeps sending 'triggers' to keep it awake.

I'm on linux/Zorin.

Solved Storage Threads / LS* linkstations and Linux
Last post by doobre - September 17, 2025, 07:22:44 AM
Hi there
The problem -
I have a problem mounting the NAS shares 'automatically' at booting up.
ONLY the 'automatic' part is not working.

Everything else is fine, Internet is fine, all local network devices are fine.
All shares on the windows PC's connect at booting up, automatically.

Manually typing ex: "smb://ls220d21e/Share_4" address in the "connect to server" box of Nautilus does mount the Nas. All 4 of them.

I can add a bookmark for the Nas shares and they work also.

Solution -

It was all caused by the buffalo Nas not being able to auto mount when set with a static IP, even though it has that option.
And they can only work on SMB1 = "NT1" in the samba world. (= Very old)

Using Winscp I made sure that the Nas were using smb v1 (required for my OPPO network players).

It took a couple of reboots of the Nas to get it straight, after re-initializing the Nas back to default (but keeping the data) adding again, the user that Plex Media Server needed and checking it was now using DHCP, the Nas' came back to life.

So if anyone else has this old hardware and linux can not get them to mount automatically at startup of the computer, don't waste your time tinkering with possible changes to 'fstab' and 'smb.conf', especially if you already know that these files are correct, just head straight to the Buffalo Nas for a full reset.
Cheers CD
