The summary sounds about right, most likely a drive dying of old age.

I'd make sure it was connected to stable power while testing, some drive errors can be false-positive if the drive is having problems that aren't specific to the drive itself like if the power supply is failing or undersized.

Likewise, if you try writing 0's and/or random data to the drive using badblocks you'll either see the pending sectors convert to reallocated sectors (likely worn out or damaged) or go away (possibly the problem wasn't permanent).

Just given the age I don't know that I would trust it much even if the errors did clear up, but it could be useful learning exercise.

I'd check the power adapter, if it's not providing enough power it might behave like that. Plenty of other possibilities but that's where I would start.

Sounds like you've got a degraded RAID1 currently. If you want to convert that to RAID0 "scary raid" you've need to reinitialize with both drives present to form the new array.

In that scenario the data on both drives is toast if one drive fails. If you want half the data to survive a drive failure you want to just set them up as two independent drives.

They've had a bad habit of updating the firmware version on the support pages but not at the URL that the firmware looks at for updates. You should be able to update using the installer on the support page.

There's also custom Debian installer available that sets up some additional tools related to controlling the LCD/Buttons/Fans and allows a headless install over SSH:

Plenty of uses for the little things but I'm not familiar with troubleshooting that backup feature. You might be able to pull a log to get a hint about what's happening.

firmware update/re-install might even help

Storage / Backup Failed - Standing By
Last post by Starb7 - October 28, 2026, 10:36:23 AM
Hi All

Not sure if anyone reads this forum any more but here goes...  I have 2 x LS210D units, one if my primary unit and the other is for some other folders and a Backup of the primary units folders.

The backup has worked fine for ages and recently, it now just show Backup Failed (with no useful info as to why) and 'Standing By'.  I have tried:

Resetting the Backup Plans
Creating new plans
Changing the IP's to Fixed IP's
Refreshing the 'Backup Target' (I can choose the folder with no issues)
Create a backup folder with no SMB or AFP set, ie just for Backups
Checked the Data and Time - both the same
Rebooted umpteen times
Changed the network to the base 1500 Frame Size (on both)

At a loss now - are these just 'bin-fodder'?

I can read and write to and from both units - no error and appear on the network fine.

Any ideas before a buy a new Synology ;)

Cheers

Further to my last post, I was able to confirm with BuffaloTech support that the following Windows products are compatible with this File Server model subject to availability of drivers for the NIC and Intel Atom Processor etc.

Terastation WSS server model WS5200DN0402W2
Supported Operating Systems:
Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 Vista, XP, 2000
Windows Server 2016, 2012R2, 2012, 2008R2, 2008, 2003, 2000 Server

Further, if the Windows license sticker is still on the machine (usually found over the front face plate), they may be able to help with getting a copy of the recovery image from Microsoft.

I was also able to install Debian 11.11.0 "Bullseye" version successfully and configure the box as a Linux based file server.

Storage / Recovery SD for Terastation WS...
Last post by kramaswamy_mdusa - October 25, 2026, 08:10:44 PM
I recently acquired a Terastation WSS server model WS5200DN0402W2, with no drives.  After working on getting it for a few hours I finally realized this to be Windows based unit.

Since I do not have the original drives or the recovery SD and I am unable to locate it on the Buffalo support site, I am posting this request to check if anyone may be able to guide me to where I could download a copy.

Based on Andrei's post (https://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=45593.msg122405#msg122405) it appears that WS 2025 worked on his machine, I will likely try to check this option out.  Would of course be much obliged if someone could direct me to an archive where I can download the original SD from.

Thanks.

Storage / Adding a second disk to a 2 ba...
Last post by steveis2 - October 22, 2026, 09:25:11 AM
Hi,
How can I add a second 1TB disk to this NAS? It currently has one 1TB drive installed that is set in raid 1. I want to add a second 1TB drive, and want both drives to act as one 2TB drive. I think that requires JBOD. Is that correct?
Do I need to back up my data on the installed drive and start by initialising the NAS from scratch then  reinstate the backed up data?
If I set it up in that way, and the 2nd drive dies, will data already on the first 1TB drive still be preserved      even though it will be lost on the second?
