After I purchased the Buffalo HD-LX3.0TU3 I found out about the problems with windows playing video from a 3TB USB 3.0 drive. This was the reason for my purchase and didn't know it would not work using usb 3.0. In some of the threads that I have read elsewhere, I see this has been going on sense 2009? Has no one fixed this yet. I now believe I should have stayed with eSata and left USB 3.0 alone. Does Buffalo have a fix for the HD-LX3.0TU3 3TB USB 3.0 so that it will work to play video files (movies) in Windows? Or does anyone know of a link to Microsoft that fixes this issue. Thanks

drmemory

what windows OS are you using? and is it a 32bit or 64bit OS? What size files are you trying to play? Is the HD-LX3.0TU3 formatted NTFS, Fat 32, or something else?

Ka4nmx

Win7 64bit NTFS formated. These are dvd movies on HD and they play fine from anything 2TB or less. Its a Windows problem with USB3.0 and 3TB. eSata and 3TB plays fines. Its just usb3.0 and has been a problem sense the release of usb 3.0 and 3TB drives. Windows can't handle the large blocks over usb 3.0

Hello - thank you for the added information. I'll move this up to our engineering staff (who will probably have more questions first)

Ka4nmx

Any ideas yet. Also, It's not just usb 3.0  3TB drives will not play DVD structures on hard drive from any usb port. However, I am mostly interested in it working from usb 3.0 because it is why I purchased the Buffalo HD-LX3.0TU3.

. Please let us know the size of the files, and the file format, so we can test with this.  We've been testing with files less than 2GB in size, and they work on win7 64 bit, with USB3

From our QA Engineers:

I just checked this with the HD-LX3.0TU3 that I have back here and I am able to play AVI, MP4, and MKV video files with no issues.

I formatted the drive to NTFS using my win7 64 bit OS.

And I also have the drive plugged into my 3.0 USB port.

These are all DVD or Bluray ripped movie files

The file sizes are as follows-

AVI - 1.37 GB
MKV - 1.49 GB
MP4 - 1.04 GB

drmemory

Please let us know the manufacturer and model of your computer, and whether you are using USB3 that came with the computer, or was added on later (if that, then mfr and model)

Get the idea? Or do you want more

Please Note; no problem running on all three computers with

Phantom Drive eSata 2TB. I just wanted to upgrade to 3TB and

USB 3.0.

Please Note: The BUFFALO DriveStation Axis Velocity 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - HD-LX3.0TU3 will NOT play DVD structures using Windows Media Player or Windows Center on any of the three computers listed above using USB 3.0 or USB 2.0.

Also Note: coping the Video structure from the BUFFALO DriveStation Axis Velocity 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - HD-LX3.0TU3 to the local desktop (<2tb) the movies will play fine. The data is on the BUFFALO DriveStation Axis Velocity 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive. It's just Windows MP can't handle it. I am looking for the original thread from 2008. I just thought Buffalo would have solved this issue by now (2012).

Note: all works well from eSata No problems.

Ka4nmx

Still looking for the thread but XBMC.ORG is the only software that will play DVD structures from 3TB hard drives

drmemory

Our QA Engineers believe this is a USB3 driver issue in your Gateway. They suggest that Gateway still has older USB3 drivers (May 2011) on their download site, so you might look here for newer USB3 drivers: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21129" target="_self">USB3 drivers

Ka4nmx

My USB drivers are up to date according to Driver Manager https://safecart.com/drivermanager/.drivermanager/purchase">https://safecart.com/drivermanager/.drivermanager/purchase

I know I have now voided my warranty but i have removed the hard drive from the LXU3 and placed it into another case that uses eSata instead of USB. All movies are playing fine.

Guess I now have a USB3.0 case that is only good for storage

Guess the USB issue will never be resolved. I am waiting for the NAS units to drop in price so I can get away from USB 3.0 all together. However, eSata still rocks and USB 3.0 isn't really that much faster.

Thanks for your help.  I will keep an eye on Microsoft's page to see if this issue ever gets fixed.

drmemory

we have still not been able to duplicate the issue you are seeing. All the video files we've tried, are playing as they should.

Ka4nmx

does your LXU3 have a seagate barracuda 3TB 7200 RPM? are you using windows media player in Windows 7? Are you playing a DVD on hard drive? Other media works. its just the movies (DVD).  Strange yours would work and it doen't on any of my three computers. Norton 360 is the only common program on all three computers, I will test this later as I am a truck driver and I have to go back on the road tommorrow. Thanks
