Hi All,

Could someone please confirm something for me kind of urgently. I have just ordered a Buffalo TeraStation III TS-X8.0TL/R5 and the idea of it is to put all my media from my PC onto it (in excess of 1000 DVDs) then stream that to all my DLNA compliant devices. Then I stumbled across these forums and I keep seeing posts about Buffalo servers not supporting MKV files. The problem is that all my video media is in MKV format as it's the only format I could find that played on all my devices (Blu Ray, AV Receiver, TV etc) and carried the right formats for keeping the Dolby 5.1 information etc. This took me hours and hours to convert all my DVDs so there is no way I could convert them to a different media type. It is currently running on a PC using Serviio and works perfectly but I need to use the PC for other things now so this seemed like an ideal solution.

Some of the posts I saw were fairly old so this may well not be the case anymore.

Could someone please confirm if I am able to stream MKV files from the above NAS box via the in-built mdia server to all my DLNA compliant devices.

If not, I need to quickly see if I can cancel my order as this would be of no use to me at all.

Many Thanks in Advance.

Steve

i can play mkv via my jailbroken ps3, but not directly to my samsung tv, basically they're running and old version of twonky on the NAS's  and it's not compatible with every media player over dlna and buffalo aren't the best at updating it. you're best bet is to go for a qnap that you can update on regular basis, if i had a second chance i'd but another

Many thanks for your quick reply. Tried to cancel the unit but it has already been shipped so I will have to see what it is like when it gets here.

migzy is correct. At the moment this unit does not support streaming MKV files. I have put in a request for an ugprade but these kind of things do take time.

Many thanks for your replies.

While browsing the web, a lot of people were saying that if you rename the file with a different extension (like .WMV), then Twonkey will quite happily stream it. It seems to be the fact that the file doesn't get indexed because MKV is not a valid extension rather than the lack of a capability to stream. Can anyone confirm if this works?

I don't really have a complicated request from a NAS box.  All I want to do is transfer all my DVDs and CDs to a central server so that I can reclaim the space that they all currently take up (the physical DVDs and CDs). I tried ripping them to many formats but MKV seemed to be the best medium that worked on all my devices and maintained quality of video and sound. Unfortunately, it's too late for me to convert them all again to a different format as there is just over 1000 DVDs and about 400 CDs.

Has there been a change here.  I just ripped a bunch of MKV files and there doesn't seem to be an issue with playing them.  I played them back, via a computer and via an Android based streamer.  Has there been a software update, or is this just an DNLA issue.  Was going to use a Dune Smart player, to do the streaming.
