I have the 4 gig linkstation quad model.

It was working fine for me for a while and then turned itself off every now and then.

After that it had a couple days of just blinking blue leds.

Now the only lights that turn on are

a) power on the power adapter (brick)

b) the green LAN light on the back of the unit

c) a faint red led is on the 4 above the function button (when the face is taken off)

I cannot access or see anything from nasnavigator..

Does anyone have an idea what I can do to try and get it to power up?

kind regards

Jotin

Power down the unit, remove the 4th drive and boot it back up. Then see if it appears normal except for the obvious error showing a missing drive. See if you can access the data.

Legionsama

Hi Jotin, thank you for your prompt response!

Unfortunately there is still no luck and the power lights will not go on even after removing the 4th hard drive. (There is no difference even if I remove all the hard drives)

Here is the red light (the other lights do not go on) - please click on the thumbnail to see it more accurately.

Here is the lan light showing power is going to it

Wow, yeah, thats really weird. It could just be a bad LED for the power section? The only thing I can really say would be to follow FAQ 3 of 5 posted at the top of the storage forum. If that doesnt work then the unit has physical damage. If you are concerned for the data then the easiest and most cost effect thing to do would be to get another Linkstation Quad and put the drives into that one and flash the firmware. If the data is priceless to you then I would go to a data recovery center like http://www.driversavers.com" rel="nofollow" target=_blank>www.driversavers.com

Legionsama

Hi Jotin,

Thank you again for your response.

On FAQ 3 of 5 (putting the linkstation into EM mode) there is no reference for Linkstation Quads, though presumably I need to hold down buttons right when the machine is switched on? In any case I think it doesnt work  (nothing comes up on the nas navigator) and there is something wrong with the terastation or even power?

Note that I am using it in Japan where it was originally from the US.

It is frustrating though considering as it hasnt even moved from its location.

I do not know what the Buffalo support is like here in Japan is it it conceivable to send to them and have them repair/look at it and if they cannot fix it just bill me for a new unit?>

I really do not want to pay for all the hard drives again if those are physically fine and presumably I cannot just use a LS-Q1.0 box instead and put the4 X 1tb hds in there?

If I do buy a new box and put the Harddrives in there will my data remain?

Jotin

You should not have to pay for new hard drives. If you can either get an advanced replacement or get a new box without drives then you can put your drives in to the replacement box and get back to your data and continue to use the unit.

Legionsama

Hi Jotin,

Forgive my ignorance here but what is an "advanced replacement "?

Does that involve contacting the Buffalo support line in my territory (Japan) and asking them for a new LS-Q4 unit (at my cost of course)?

Or replacing it with an advanced model such as the:

4TB
LS-QV4.0TL/R5
¥85,000

and swapping out the harddrive/or buying just the unit?

I have looked on the online sites here in Japan and there doesnt seem to be sales of just the box itself without the Hard Drives.

From what I have read purchasing a LS-Q1.0tl unit and replacing the hard drives is possible but that will cause loss of all data as it will need a rebuild of an array

Apologies for the layman questions and thanks in advance

Legionsama

Oh and the other thing is that the machine I have was originally from the US.

If I get a box out here in Japan then will my hard drives still be compatible?

Or will they need to be flashed first?

Failing that..will I have to order from America?

If so, who do I order from?

Apologies I need some files for a project ..

Jotin

An advanced replacement will get you out a unit first if you are within warranty. The only cost to you is shipping. But yes, if you bought your unit in America you would need to contact the American support line for help. They will only be able to ship to the us. You would have to have someone else ship to you in Japan.

It can be hard to find just the unit itself with no drives. If you cannot then you will have to purchase the whole thing. When you get the replacement unit which ever way you go about getting it, you will have to repalce all 4 dirves at once and follow FAQ 3 of 5 that is pinned at the top of the storage forum.

Legionsama

Thanks Jotin - I had my work mate phone the Japanese support line and they said they would only be able to repair it if it were Japanese bought.

I will get her tomorrow to ask if they sell just the unit itself .

If I do manage to get the Japanese version could I still do FAQ 3 of 5?

Jotin

Sorry about the delay but yes, I do not see why FAQ 3 of 5 would not work on a Japanese unit.

Legionsama

Thank you for your response again Jotin, it is much appreciated.

Well my work mate phoned the Japanese support line and they were not being very cooperative saying that because it was a US machine they will not do anything with it. They will not even send a box out at my cost , even though i said to my workmate id pay for the box and shipping:(

So I am contacting my friend in the US to see if she can call the US side for me ..fingers crossed!

Jotin

When did you purchase it? The unit has a one year warranty so if its within that time we would be able to get you out a new box. And when she calls please mention this forum post so anyone who answers will see this thread and they will be able to confirm everything with me.

Legionsama

I phoned through and spoke to John.

He was really nice actually, pleasant sounding and sounded interested.

Unfortunately I cant be helped as its over a year since i purchased it.

I will just have to buy a box out here in Japan and just hope that its compatible via your steps.

Ill bring a friend to see how long the Japanese warranty is :)

And then I think Ill purchase a separate HD to link to the linkstation and make regular backups.

I guess I will have 4 backup 1 TB hds too :)
