Whenever i seem to copy files onto the drive station the process starts but then just gives up and freezes and causes me to cold restart the pc. the format is exfat as well and iv tried it with ntfs with the same results so what could it be?

What OS are you running?  A process starting and freezing on one computer could be a completely different story on another PC running another OS.

I am currently running windows 7 32bit edition

Have you tried toggling the switch from AUTO to MANUAL and then back again or vice versa?

Yea i have just tried both ways on and off but still get same freezing

Has your PC recently come out of hibernation?  Is USB legacy enabled in your BIOS?  Is your BIOS up to date?

hasnt come out of hibernation and as far as i no BIOS is uptodate however i dnt no about the legacy thing never heard of that.

Usually, within the BIOS or CMOS settings you can enable/disable USB legacy driver support.  There was a similar issue with a previous user and having difficulty with a Firewire connection to one of our external storage devices.  Give it a try and post back please.

I have had a search around the bios but cannot find an option for usb legacy, i looked in the peripheral sections but just seemed to be speed options and others. iv got an xfx 790i ultra motherboard

Are you able to run a disk check on the drive?  Perchance the volume might have errors.

Yea ran disk check and all seems fine no errors, how long would a full reformat using the disk take on the 700gb external hard drive? and would that sort it?

Approximately 4 hours and it might since a format would correct (or at least mark) bad sectors and also handle any file table corruption that may have occurred.

Ok i have set the disk reformatter off and will leave it over night and report back tomorrow morning with any developments. If the red light goes out does that mean something is broken?

If I recall correctly that's the access light, if it goes out or stays stuck on formatting for longer than 7 hours then there is definitely something up with the disk.  Thanks for the continued updates :)

i have left the drivestation formatter on all nite however when i woke the red light was out but the program was still running and nothing seemed to be happening. When i tried to stop the program it would not respond and my pc wouldnt let me access my computer or disk management.
