Hi,

Not so much a problem, more looking for some advice really. I have a Linkstation Live (LS-CHL F/W 1.07 Blue UI) which is working really well for me. I have it always on as it is used by various members of the household access it. I can't use the Auto On/Off feature as I use Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) so can't install the software.

I'm getting worried about leaving it on in this way; the drive never seems to spin down when not in use. I've turned off the Media and FTP servers, Apple Talk and web access (it's used mostly as a Samba share, NTP, Bittorrent is enabled and I would like to set it up as a print server).

So my bit of advice I wanted was this: should I be worried about the drive being always on?  After all if I was using the web access feature it would have to be always on. Would anything in mysetup keep the drive always spinning?Or has someone found a solution to getting the Auto On/Off feature with Linux?

Many thanks in advaice.

Pradeep.

As our devices and software are not supported with Linux there's little I can say in this matter.  The drives always being on? Not a huge problem unless they're constantly being read from/written to.  Generally, the Auto On/Off feature is meant for a single system use.  When multiple users are involved (with the software installed) the device turns on and off constantly (with the delay for boot up) which in my opinion causes more wear and tear on the system than keeping it on constantly.

Thanks Dustrega, reassurance that I wasn't going to cause a problem leaving it always on was what i was looking for, more than anything else.

Ah! I can see why I also have a problem.

OK, I am an IT journalist and I will write an article to advise people not to buy Buffalo equipment if they use Linux.

This will save you having to answer questions you are not geared for.

If you have any equipment which you do support on Linux, please add it here and I will mention the exceptions.

In Europe Linux is taking off, The French Gendarmerie are moving 100,000 windows machines to Ubuntu, A French car manufacturer has recently moved 20,000 desktopps to SuSE and the Spanish Government are moving 500,000 college, schools and educational department PCs over to Ubuntu.
