I have a Buffalo HD-CE500U2 250gb external hard drive that was working fine until i opened a downloaded file that was corrupt, Now my laptop wont recognize my hard drive at all. When plug in hard drive get error mesage usb device not recognized.

I have unpluged and restarted hard drive numerous times and checked device manager which it doesnt appear on there.

Is there anything I can do as its got family photo's on there which i need to retrieve or is this hard drive useless now?

Device manager may not recognize the divice, is this under the hard drives catagory? what about under the USB host controller catagory?  Is the device recognized in the disk management?  There could be a problem with the partition information or the MBR.  With more detail we can help to asses the problem further and provide a solution.
