I have a 1TB DriveStation DUO (HD-WIU2/R1) and am thinking of replace and upgrade the harddisk. Does it support 2TB x 2, i.e. total 4TB ?

Technically it can work but Buffalo does not support it.

I tried the 2*2TB solution with HD-WIU2, after upgrading firmware but didn't work. Got only 1.8 TB.

I am surpised since the previous upgrade fron 2*500 to 2*1TB was working fine.

I could get a 4TB RAID using MAC OS capability but it was not very stable.

Any other comment or help available?

2TB hardisk are Seagate, I am using Snow Leopard and connect HD-WIU2 with Firewire.
