Canceling a locked-up backup

I have a TeraStation Live.  For the first time I've attempted to use external USB drives attached to it in order to do backups of the data.

Now, there may be an issue with the drives going to sleep, I don't know yet.  The problem is that I initiated an 'immediate' backup job to one of these drives, the folder size is approximately 900GB, these are 2TB external drives.

The backup started several days ago, and started off agonizingly slow.  It has now been stuck at 230.5GB of data copied for several days, no change in data transfer, I don't hear the noise of the Terastation or the USB drives that I previously heard.

Note that both drives were formatted from the Terastation prior to use, using the default formatting method.

There are oodles of notes about how a backup can't be easily stopped, but I need to know how to proceed from this point.  How can I stop the backup?  Once stopped, how can I check and see if any USB power-down is causing problems?  If I manually copy the folders from the Terastation to the USB drive, and then use the same folder as a target for a differential backup, is this a better solution?

Any additional assistance would be greatly appreciated.  While I'm (overall) reasonably happy with the performance of the Buffalo products, the transfer speed (both from the NAS to the USB drives, and to/from the NAS in general, leaves a lot to be desired, particularly when copying large numbers of small files.
