Hi,
How can I add a second 1TB disk to this NAS? It currently has one 1TB drive installed that is set in raid 1. I want to add a second 1TB drive, and want both drives to act as one 2TB drive. I think that requires JBOD. Is that correct?
Do I need to back up my data on the installed drive and start by initialising the NAS from scratch then  reinstate the backed up data?
If I set it up in that way, and the 2nd drive dies, will data already on the first 1TB drive still be preserved      even though it will be lost on the second?

Sounds like you've got a degraded RAID1 currently. If you want to convert that to RAID0 "scary raid" you've need to reinitialize with both drives present to form the new array.

In that scenario the data on both drives is toast if one drive fails. If you want half the data to survive a drive failure you want to just set them up as two independent drives.
