Using a USB hub with a Linkstation to add more than one device?

I know that using a USB hub with a linkstation to connect more than one device is unsupported, BUT!

 

Has anybody tried it with any success?

 

I have a LS-CH1.0TL with a 1TB USB drive that I would like to leave permanently connected to do daily scheduled backups, but I also have a UPS which I would also like to connect so that I can get the LS to shutdown in the event of a power outage.

 

I don't know what the USB data overheads of a UPS are but I would imagine not very much - is it possible that if I had both connected by a hub I would be able to use them in this way without any problems/data corruption.

 

I understand that the official line will be "don't do it" - but is there any reason why?  How do the units with 2 USB ports differ from using an external hub?

 

Also, might I suggest that Buffalo consider adding a second port to the LS, or make it hub-compatible in the future?  Anybody with any sense will want to run a regular automated backup, and many will also want to use it as a printer server (I have a separate LAN based solution), or with a UPS for peace of mind.  I know the more expensive LS have 2 USB ports, but a LS Duo for example is more than double the price of a normal LS-CHL.
