TeraStation Duo - UPS Compatability?

I'm looking to buy a TeraStation Duo TS-WX1.0TL/R1, and am trying to find out what UPS models are compatible. The down-loadable manual (pg 57) says it can connect via either serial or USB, but offers little further information.

A search of the forum discloses a number of questions about issues with various models, and there's mention of a compatibility chart, but I can't find one that includes this model. Where can I learn what UPS's will work with the TS Duo?

We've used APC-branded UPS Back-UPS NS 1250VA  and they worked fine with TS Duo's and the USB Port.

Thanks, rinthos

That at least says it's not limited to the SmartUPS line, which is what I finally found mentioned in the specifications section of the manual. It's troubling that Buffalo isn't more forthcoming with this information. I'm having second thoughts about buying from them. :smileysad:

TerryR,

Yeah it wasn't my intention to leave you with only '1' model option, but given how APC brands their models you're likely to find comparable UPS models from them that use the same inner-workings as the one i referenced (obviously larger/smaller batteries).  I used to be much more familiar w/ the products but afraid I've since become disconnected.

My advice would  be to stick with APC-branded UPS models and give them a shot.

Regarding Buffalo's "compatibility" list, yes it is very painful to get support to provide any information about these features when they are clearly advertised features.  It's almost like the support-matrix piece was missing.

Here's the documentation I have for my team that we use for our Terastation quick-check for compatibility:

1) Go to: http://buffalo.jp/taiou/ups/datasheet/tera_ups_sheet.pdf">http://buffalo.jp/taiou/ups/datasheet/tera_ups_sheet.pdf

NOTE: Make sure you have japanese fonts installed for Adobe or it will look fairly empty.\

2) Pages 2 and 3 of that file are APC models.  Look in the LEFT column for the model numbers, and look in the THIRD column for the type of connection Buffalo Japan has tested (note USB vs/ 9 pin serial).

3) With the Japanese APC model numbers, you should be able to figure out the U.S. equivilent and away you go.

---Again as noted above, anything with the same 'series' (but larger/smaller battery) that my group has used seem to work fine.

And for clarity, No I don't work for Buffalo, I'm just a customer like you, but this is the closest I've gotten to finding 'supported' UPS models.

If you're evaluating pre-purchase and trying to figure out what to get, definately post on these forums and you're likely to get some good feedback.  Buffalo products tend to have a more limited featureset (although the new Terastations do have that live-replication feature which is a rare find) than the competitive products, and Buffalo tends to follow the 'set it and forget it until there's a problem' mentality which has pros and cons.

The challenge is 'setting it with third-party products' where it gets complicated.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again rinthos,

Yes, that does help. It looks like a number of models have been tested, and probably others will work as well. I've got a couple of APC UPSs available to use with the unit, so should be able to find one that works. If not, they don't cost that much.

I'm not looking for much in the way of features - I plan to use it only as a data backup system for our home computers, in conjunction with a separate on-line backup service.

For the record, I did get a response from support today, stating that the APC Smart-UPS, ES, and CS series are compatible, as well as several Omron models.
