USb disk problems, + boot disk check procedures

I just got a terastation HD H1.0TGL/R5 and after an hour of playing, got it to work on a mixed windows network (XP, Vista, 7), at the time, I reset the box with the init switch, and upon recreating the RAID array, it began checking the RAID disks. It completed the check fine over night, but everytime I restart it, it goes through the 6 hour  disk "checking" process again. Is this normal? Does this occur after every boot or did I shut the thing down improperly? Is there a way to bypass the disk check, or do I not want to? Any help is appreciated.

Also, when I plugged in a USB external drive (Seagate 1 TB drive in a rosewill HDD Sata dock, it seems to be recognized by the unit, and is listed in the web interface, but I can't access the drive from Windows. It showed up as a share originally (USBDisk2), but wouldn't accept a password. There was a SMB file sharing error first, and I couldn't access the terastation at all, except via web interface. Since it started when I tried to plug in the USB Drive, I unplugged it, then I deleted all the USB relationships and reconnected to a different USB port. Now, I can access the RAID disks, and the USBDisk2 (original share) shows up in windows, but I can't access it. Further, the new (USBdisk1) Share isn't coming up at all. When I try to connect, I am faced with a Windows login screen, but no user/password combination seems to work.

1) the USB drive is formatted NTFS. Does it have to be reformatted using XFS? Do I have to set permissions or create an account to access it, or is there some pother procedure I am missing?

You will need to format the external hd through the buffalo to xfs.
