RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

Hello,

Have just purchased the LS-XH1.0TL, firmware 1.10. My apologies if this has been asked before - I could not find it when searching the forum.

I'd be grateful if anyone knows why the drive does not seem to show 1000GB. In the system/storage page on the web access tool, the drive (HD103SI) capacity is shown as 961,618,816KB and the system information panel and NASNavigator2.22 shows 917.1GB.

Of course I fully expect to lose some capacity in the formatted usable space, but I expected the rated capacity to be closer to 1000GB, and hence more more usable space than 917GB. I have effectively lost over 80GB or 8% of the advertised 1.0TB

Is this due to some partitioning? And if so, for what purpose?

Many thanks.

The firmware and the RAID are both software

I'm not sure what you're saying. It doesn't seem relevant to the question and RAID is not applicable to the LS-XHL, as far as I'm aware. Can you explain further?

Thank you.

Correct RAID would have anything to do with it in this case, but the fact remains that the firmware takes up space as do several of the other functions on the unit.
