Ok, so I went out and purchased the 1tb Linkstation live and moved all files (.mp4) over to it and was ready to stream them to my xbox and nothing. I am able to see all my pictures and all my music but no .mp4 files. Any ideas? I do not have the most current firmware could this be the problem?

Hi,

Firmware isnt an issue, two things you need to make sure.  The file extension has to be .m4v and make sure that the movie isnt 5.1. xbox360 doesnt natively support 5.1 in an mp4 format.  The are free and simple software packages to strip out 5.1 audio if the 2.0 is there too....

can get a bit confusing but hope u get it working.

So is this a Buffalo issue or an Xbox issue. Because if I use Media player to sync the videos to my xbox it can play all my .mp4 files. I really hate to have ot chance 700 files from .mp4 to .m4v. Do you know if there is a program that can do this automatically? Seems like a shortfall of Bufallo not to support this file type.

for me it was an issue with twonky media (which is the media server behind my buffalo linkstation) not recognising mp4 files... if i rip my dvd to my pc then ill make it m4v.  a quick way to change lots of file extensions is by doing it in a cmd window. but this only works if all the files are in the same directory eg

ren *.mp4 *.m4v

using an asterisk ascts as a wildcard.

i looked for quite a while to get the issue sorted and only way i found was a file extension rename...

Ok, so I am an idiot and not very good with the command prompt stuff. My videos are on a usb drive, so how do I tell it to look in the usb drive? letter is e: in a folder called movies?

at the command promt type:

e:

cd movies

ren *.mp4 *.mv4

exit

Thanks all for the speedy replies. I found a program that changed all the files extensions for me in one swoop. Its a trial porgram so it only let me do 1000 files but thats ok because I only had 1024 files total. So I did the rest manually. Now if I could only get the remote access to work. Seems the linkstation does not see my router which has upnp, so someone mentioned that I should not use it and just open up port 9000, I'll have to find how to do that. Thanks again for all your help.

haha remote access.... that made me chuckle...

i found your post whilst looking for a fix for my remote web access. works internally, the http:\\private_IP_adress:9000 and if i go to http:\\buffalonas.com.

however doesnt work from internet side...

tried dyndns, tried buffalonas none of it works with uPNP or if i use manual port forwarding.

:robotmad:

try portforward.com for that!

good luck!

Hey Matt, sorry hear that you are having so many problems. In my case the upnp was crud. I had to turn it off on the router and disable the auto option on the NAS but once I opened port 9000 on the virtual server section of my router it has worked perfect. As a matter of fact we were able to watch a movie last night while driving. I have a set up were I can hook up my iphone to my car stereo and tv's and watch what ever is on the ipod. The movie froze a couple of times for a few seconds, I think while it buffered but besides that it worked fine. What I cant get to work is the set up were you set a folder to be vieable only by the users/groups. I had to set up the folders to be anonymous. Let me know if there is anything I can help with. The way I am able to go to the webaccess on my phone is by typing in http://www.buffalonas.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.buffalonas.com/ then I enter my nas name here.
