Vista & Print Server Issues

Running Vista 64bit, have a Linkstation Pro LS-XHL 1TB with firmware 1.10. Tried to install an HP 1505P laserjet. Everything says it worked, but no printing. And not from another laptop with standard Vista. Hit print and everything acts like it is working, but nothing comes out of the printer.

Help!

PCPiranha

Is this a multifunction printer?  Does it support post script?

lopix

No, just a standard and simple laser printer. It does not support post script as far as I know.

PCPiranha

We only support printers that support post script

lopix

It says the standard printer language is "Host-based printing". Does that help? Nowhere does it say if it does, or does not, support postscript.

And if this is a requirement, why does it not say it in any of the documentation? If I knew it would not work with my printer, I would not have bought it. Not complaining, just saying...

PCPiranha

Post Script is the protocol that the print server uses when printing.

lopix

I know what it is, I just cannot find anything that says whether or not the printer supports it. I am guessing not, otherwise it would say so.

So, no postscript means the printer will not work? Again, I wish that was mentioned more prominently on the box or in the promo material.

PCPiranha

It doesn't mean that it won't work.  It is very possible that you get a printer w/o postscript to print, the problem is that we can't support it unless it uses the protocol that our LS does.

I will send a request up on further documentation about post script.

lopix

If it were a postscript printer, what would you suggest I do?

PCPiranha

First thing I would do is clear the queue and try again.  If you still don't have any luck I'd reset it.

What process are you using to setup/print?

lopix

I set it up exactly the way the manual desribes.

1) Enabledthe print server

2) Went to the 'lp' icon and clicked connect

3) Clicked OK at the print driver warning

4) Add printer dialogue came up, had disk, followed prompts

Tried a test print, no go. Tried to print a page from IE, no go. Just hitting CTRL-P and pressing enter...

PCPiranha

And you connected to the printer locally on the computers as well?  You also typed in \\IP and right clicked on the printer folder and went to connect?

lopix

The printer is connected only to the Linkstation.

Where would I type \\IP?

If I right-click on the 'lp' folder and select 'connect' it says it already is connected. I did try that originally.

PCPiranha

You still need the drivers on the computer

lopix

Got those, had the printer installed directly on this computer before. And went through the whole add printer install routine that the Linkstation asked for. Put the CD in and let it do its thing.
