[Solved] File bigger than 2gb wont copy? Samba, Netbios. Linux

Only one thread about this relating to apple products.  I'm copying from a data drive on my machine (running linux) to the NAS (linkstation) and it always stops at 2gb saying files too big.   Just trying to copy the win7 RC DVD iso which is 2.4gb +/-.

 

What gives?  Supposedly no file size limit exists for smbfs.

Solution was to add the IP (it was made static in the Buffalo device config) to my /ect/hosts, modify my /etc/fstab to use the device IP (/xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/share /mnt/here), not the name, and change file system type in /etc/fstab from smbfs to cifs.  Successfully copied the 2.4gb win7 iso.  Seems much speedier too.

What device model are you trying to copy?

The 2gb limitation isn't as big of an issue for most Buffalo NAS devices, since buffalo uses XFS.

As per that link:

 

"3. Use suitable filesystems. These include ext2/ext3, ReiserFS v. 3.6.x and up, IBM's JFS, SGI's XFS, and recent NFSv3 client drivers "

 

XFS is indeed in use and can indeed store larger filesystems, so the original poster (OP) needs to provide more detail about storage device model, how it is connected, firmware version, OS version(s), etc to troubleshoot further.

Buffalo Model is HS-DH500GL, Firmware 2.11, connecting via ethernet linksys 8-port gigabit switch.

 

My pc is running PCLOS, with ext3 as filesystem, kernel 2.6.28 or something like that.  I have the connection to the NAS setup via SAMBA, so is the 2gb limit somthing in SAMBA config?

Could indeed be a Samba limit, yeah.   :( Older versions of Samba have this restriction and newer ones have conf options that can result in the same problem.  Might want to try mounting it as a true cifs filesystem which should work around the limit of smbfs.

 

Alternatively, you could try modifying samba configuration (a quick web search on samba configs will yield quite a few options) for your system.

 

Worst case, the linkstation cifs (samba) implementation/config is preventhing this...but I'd try reconfiguring your system (and the mount of the share) first.  Think you might be able to work around it that way.
