Using two Linkstation Pro XHLs. I can do an immediate backup from one to the other. But a scheduled backup fails.

Here's the log:

rsync: failed to connect to 192.168.1.73: Connection refused (111)
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(122) [sender=3.0.3]

Are you running firmware 1.10 on both?

I recall back in v1.02 there were issues w/ failing backup jobs, but sure if it was related though.  So make sure you update  both to 1.10, re-init both systems, then re-configure the backup jobs and give another shot, see if that fixes it.

Just to make sure, you're network routing etc. is still fully functional at the times you're trying to run this, correct? And both Linkstations devices are 'awake' and actively running?

rinthos, thanks for replying

  • Firmware is 1.10 on the backup target, 1.02 1.03 on the source.
  • Network routing is fully functional at scheduled time
  • Both devices have their power switch on auto. At the scheduled time, they would be in the low-power state.

Gotcha.

To narrow down the issue, put both on manual (so they stay on), and get that second one up to firmware 1.10.

That should get you back up and running scheduled backup jobs.

If so, then you can figure out how you want to manage the auto-mode settings to optimize your power usage etc.

I'm going to make these changes one at a time so we can see what was causing the problem.

I updated the firmware to 1.10 yesterday, but the backup failed to run last night.

Will try re-init and deleting backup job next and let everyone know what happens.

Ok look forward to your results.

Don't forget to switch to manual (instead of auto) for both systems, so they'll be 'awake' :)

I purposely left it on auto to see if the new firmware was still defective. It is.

What I have concluded is:

a)      A Linkstation LS-XHL cannot wake up its identical twin; apparently a design defect.

b)      When the power switch is set to Auto, the only thing that will wake it up and put it to sleep is a PC. It will not wake at the time you set in "Power Management".

c)      If you schedule your Linkstation to go to sleep, your PC cannot wake it up. So it is unavailable until its scheduled wakeup.

I cannot think of any good option:

a)      I don't want it running 24/7. It uses as much power as a CFL. While not a huge amount, it's an unnecessary waste, especially since I only backup once a week.

b)      I don't want to bother with manually switching it on before the backup runs, I want the backups to run automatically when I'M asleep.

c)      I don't want it waking and sleeping on a schedule, since I need to access it from my PC at random moments.

d)     I don't want to do manual backups, I want them to be automatic.

I realize now I should have just stuck with a USB drive for backups. There is no "power management" to worry about, the drive wakes up and sleeps automatically when the Linkstation does. That's great, the Linkstation will wake up a USB drive made by a different company, but not its twin sister.
