I just picked up a used Terastation Pro (TS-1.0TGL/R5) without any drives.  Before I order drives for the unit, I thought it best to ask what is the largest size drive that this unit will recognize?  Which type is the best to get?

Thanks,

Brian Johnston

So first, I assume you have the empty drive trays (at least) for the TS Pro.

Also, I'm assuming it's the original TS Pro (and not a Pro 2 etc).

Finally, not sure about your warranty concerns, but I don't think Buffalo support will assist you if you are not using drives provided by them.

Those things aside, the largest they shipped the original Terastation with was 2TB (4 x 500GB Drives).

Given the limited memory/cpu of the system, I'd suggest getting drives no larger than 500GB each (so total of 4 x 500 = 2000 = 2TB).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I have the trays, just need to pick up some drives for the unit.  It is the TS Pro.  I'm not worried about warranty support as it is used and I picked it up for a good price.  It's more of a toy that I'm setting up at home at this point.  I was just wondering if the unit (model TS-1.0TGL/R5) will support anything larger than the 500gb drives.  I have a pair of WD green 1tb drives and was thinking of picking up another pair of those if it would support it, but if it's limited to 500Gb drives, then so be it.

Thanks again.

Yeah.  I'd be concerned w/ block-size settings that the Terastation uses, as well as the processing power when using the larger drives.

Just a note for the WD green drives (great drives, i use some WD10EADS 1tb drives myself) as there have been several people reporting issues using them in NAS devices as well as Linux desktops:

bejohn2,

Rinthos was 100% right.  I wouldn't put in drives that are more than double the intended capacity.  Also, because these are not the drives that came with the unit we will not be able to warrant the drives themselves.  We will still honor our warranty on the case however.
