LS Pro 500gb issues backing up to USB HDD

I've searched first through out the forum.  I've read several threads about various back up problems but nothing that quite describes the issue I'm having...which is: "An error occurred during backup"

I have also read about the 4 different types of back ups and suspect maybe that might be a problem but before I go chasing my tail figured I might post here to see if I'm on the right track.

LS Pro (GigaLink - identifies as LS-GL310) with a Seagate FreeAgent 500gb external HDD. The LS does recognize and identify the Seagate.

I use LS as an MP3 storage device and want to have all the files backed up to the Seagate on a weekly basis.  The Seagate is NTFS.

1. LS Pro firmware is 1.13

2. BackUp job is scheduled for once a week

3. Back up job is the MP3 folder - currently about 205gb - which is a root folder on the Buffalo (all MP3 data, in which are many subfolders and files reside in this root MP3 folder) destination to the USB Disk 1 (the Seagate).

4. I've tried reformatting the Seagate (again NTFS) still no luck.  There are no folders on the Seagate (do I need to create a folder on the Seagate first?  I figured the LS would do this during the backup).

5. "Normal Back" up is selected in the drop down.

6. Ignore the errors and proceed back up anyway is checked

7. The LS-GL is XFS file format (default)

I'd like to keep the Seagate USB HDD in NTFS mode, so it can be read (in the event of a LS-GL failure) by my PCs.  But I'm wondering if this is where my problem lies?  I realize that if the Seagate is in NTFS format, I will not be able to restore to another LinkStation.

Or perhaps I have a file path that is too long.  I'm about 95% certain that no given file name (MP3 file) is longer than 125 characters) including name of the LS-G310 (which I don't think pertains) and all folder names and even the mp3 extension.

I just reliazed that, in the shared folders setup (for the shared folder named MP3) "Disk Backup" was not checked.  I'm guessing that might be the problem.

If so, it would be nice to not let that be folder be an option when setting up a back up project.  In other words, don't let that folder be an optionas a target folder when setting up a back up project until the Disk Backup option is checked in the "shareed folder" properties?

I've got a backup scheduled for later this afternoon.  We'll soon see if that was the issue.  I'll report back..but if anyone has any comments about any of my questions in the first post, I'd love to hear them.

It probably won't work the drive can only backup to drives formatted in FAT32 or XFS. Keeping that drive in NTFS will cause issues for you.

Update:

I formatted the external USB drive to XFS, still got errors and gave up.

I checked it a month later and lo and behold it had actually backed up all the files to the USBdisk1 all (204gb). But still reported errors.  I have since added many files to the Link Station and back up problems are back.  It has not backed up any of the added files or folders since the original success Buffalo is now 218gb and USB disk1 is still tuck on 204gb) and still reports errors.  I checked the box for error reports log and here is what one of the error log txt files indicates:

-------- BEGIN BACKUP 2009/10/01 01:30:02 disk1/share -> LS-GL310@usbdisk1 --------
building file list ...
4 files to consider
rsync: cannot stat destination "/mnt/usbdisk1/_backups": Input/output error (5)
rsync error: errors selecting input/output files, dirs (code 3) at main.c(493) [receiver=2.6.8]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(463) [sender=2.6.8]
-------- END BACKUP 2009/10/01 01:30:02 disk1/share -> LS-GL310@usbdisk1 --------

anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?  I've tried selecting the various differential backup options (etc...) on the drop down, to no avail.  Any help or insight would be appreciated.

If it did it once successfully, why can't it keep updating the external drive with the added data?

If you have a problem because your path is too long, I suggest that you try using the Long Path Tool. It will help you with your problem, you should check it
