TS-2.0TGL/R5 died... data recovery options

Good evening everyone,

I have a TS-2.0TGL/R5 that died recently and it holds a lot of photos from my wife's side photography business.  I believe that the hard drives are just fine. I'm thinking it is a hardware failure.  Buffalo support tells me that it is out of support so they asked me to ask on the forums or contact DriveSavers Data Recovery.

I have 4 500Gb drives in there that were NOT in a RAID configuration. What are my recovery options?

1. Would I be able to mount them to any other device and copy my data that out that way?
2. Is there any sort of proprietary drive encryption that would stop me from forensically carving out any data?
3. Anything else I may have missed? I'd just rather not spend any money recovering data that I could probably do myself.

Thanks,

Jammy
