Remove AD users in hdusers group

We recently acquired 3 terastations from another university that used active directory. We are not connecting the terastations to AD.
When I attempt to add the users, with the same name as their directory, I get a message about a duplicate user.
I see the users are still showing in the hdusers group but, I can't delete them or the group.
How do I remove the old AD users?
