errors on my LS-WXL LinkStation

I have had five years' flawless service from my LS-WXL LinkStation but in recent days things have started to go wrong. Clearly there is a disk read error issue and I need advice on how to proceed with this. Can someone help please?

Usually I have the unit switched on for several hours every day but power it down at night. Now, when I start it up it takes several minutes to boot.

When eventually up and running, it is now very slow to display contents of folders etc., although read/write speeds seem unaffected.

On switching on, I receive emails telling me:

DISK Error Notification

HDD error occurred
Disk(s) the error occurred:"Disk 1"

(sda) READ sector:7031520 count:1
Disk writing error
Continuous backup is recommended.

Logging into the admin console under System/Maintenance, the report tells me "fan failure, disk error" - but it appears (and sounds ...) as if the fan is actually working.

Please, can someone advice me on how to proceed? I have little experience of troubleshooting units of this kind - my LinkStation has "just worked". I am taking steps to make new copies of all my data, even though disk 2 of my RAID array appears unaffected.

Can the unit be serviced/repaired in any way - or should I regard it as broken?

Thanks in anticipation.

This is only options for email notification, not a fan failure.

You do however need to replace disk1, then rebuild the RAID.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
Having network issues? Drop me an email: info@interwebsireland.com and we will get it fixed!

Have i helped you? Buy me a coffee as a thanks!

Thanks very much indeed for the advice, and clarification about the fan error message.

My LinkStation is the LS-WXL 4 TB version. Please can someone advise me of the product i.d./serial number of the replacement disk I need to buy? I have been googling round a bit and I am not sure how to identify it ... I am hoping that it is still available for a unit that's now a few years old. Thanks in anticipation.

Any standard 2TB SATA II disk should work, just check the specs on the faulty disk (put the model into google) and match them. The make/model does not need to be the same.
