TeraStation Live with System Error E04 (Can't Load Kernel)

I have a TeraStation Live NAS 2TB HS-DH2.0TGL/R5

It's worked flawlessly for years until yesterday it was unreachable. After reboot (holding in the front power button) it ended up with a Red error LED light and the LCD screen message "System Error E04 Can't Load Krnl". It just beeps continuously from there.

I've conducted multiple restarts with the same result. I also have no IP connectivity. I can't ping the TeraStation using the Fixed IP address I assigned it (192.168.1.20), although the Link/Activity LED flashes rapidly during the boot up process.

The front panel has four LEDs for the four hard drives (I'm in RAID 5). It looks like during the boot process, it flashes on the first drive LED for a few seconds then goes to the second drive's LED. When it gets to this second drive, there's a clicking sound every 2 to 3 seconds and the LED never moves to the third drive's LED. I don't know if that's relevant. After about a minute it errors out and starts to beep.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In my post above, I mention that my TeraStation won't load the kernel AND that I suspect something's wrong with drive number 2 (clicking sound etc.). Is it wise to remove drive number 2 while it's powered down, then restart the TeraStation to see if this fixes the problem?

Hi.

I have a TeraStation Live HS-DH2.0TGL/RF with four 500GB Samsung disks in RAID5 configuration. The unit stopped responding and upon reboot it can't load the kernel. During startup the system stalls while it's accessing disk two. Disk two just clicks once every second or so.  the NAS eventually halts and beeps.

Should I remove disk two and restart the NAS?

Remove disk2, with the problem disk removed it should go into EM mode and allow you to update the firmware.

I removed disk 2 and it did go into EM mode as you suggested. Using TSUpdater I applied the firmware (after disabling my firewall). Disk #3 began clicking so now I know I have two bad disks. The firmware did not take. The LCD panel indicated that I have bad sectors on disk 3.

I packed up the TeraStation and took it to a local data recovery company.
