Read Only Web Access, but open access over network on Linkstation

Hi,

We have a Linkstation LS-WXL895.

We have had the Linkstation on the network for the past couple of years as a shared network drive. One of our users who works from home remotely, wants to have access to one of the folders, so I have been trying to set this up as read only.

If I add the first level folder to the shared folders and ticked the access restrictions, then the open access on the network is then prevented. Users are asked for a password.

What I want is for the network access to be unrestricted, and be able to register a user for web access as read only. Is this possible?

In 'Shared Folders', I have created a user and added it to a new group. I have set this group as Read Only under the Access Restrictions for local groups.

Under web access settings, I've added 'Use Inherited Folder Permissions'

This seems to disable the open network access, but enables the read only access for the read only user over web access.

I need one (unrestricted, no login Network access), with read only Web Access for this one user. Is it possible?

Thanks,
Eric

You have given the group read only access on the admin page so of course it will only have read only access on web access!

"I need one (unrestricted, no login Network access), with read only Web Access for this one user. Is it possible?"

No

No

I want them to have read access over web access, but for anyone on the same network, I don't want the login page to pop up.

I guess from reading one of your other other replies to a question regarding web access, this isn't possible. Am I right in saying, you can only turn on access restrictions for a folder, for BOTH shared folders and Web Access, but not just Web Access?

Correct, you can't use different restrictions / permissions for the same user on different services.

Correct, you can't use different restrictions / permissions for the same user on different services.

But, can you have different restrictions for shared folders (over the network) and web access?

The ideal scenario would be

1. All local networked users able to map the folder on the drive without having to log on. The local users never log on to access the Linkstation as a mapped drive. (This is how the folder currently is and how we would like it to remain, for local users).
2. One user accessing the folder as read only over web access, who obviously would have to login.

We haven't got anything special set up in terms of users/windows on our network. Most people don't log on to their PCs and
we have different versions of windows (XP/7/10) running so don't have anything special set up to deal with the server access.

We have just plugged it into the switch which is also connected to one of our routers. The only thing we have set up is a static IP for the Linkstation on the router.

Is it possible to have the above?

Thanks for your help.

How about FTP? Is it possible to have open shared folders on the network - (no webaccess enabled) but FTP enabled, and have the remote user transfer his files read only from the directory with secured ftp?

Edit :  I'm guessing you can't seeing as it looks like you have to apply access restrictions to everything under shared folder support - it doesn't look like you can just apply it to ftp alone and exclude access restrictions from windows sharing?
