I have a Terastation Live 2 gig NAS. When I first set it up it was running Raid1. After a while I wiped the harddrives and ran Raid5. It seemed like is would take longer to upload movies and other large data in Raid5 than it did in Raid1.

My question is will the read/write times be affected by the use of any of the Raid configuration? If so which is the worst for read/write times and which is the best?

Or, was it all just my imagination?

Thanks,

Marcel

The raid does not affect the rate of upload. Standard up load time regardless of raid is 5 to 7 minutes per gig.

5-7 minutes per gig upload is about what I am experiencing. I have wondered what the typical upload time was compared to mine. How does Raid5 affect download, and how does it affect multiple user at the same time type of downloads? I guess what I am after is which Raid configuration would be best for download speeds, including multiple user downloads. For instance watching 2 or 3 movies at the same time?

Thanks,

Caleb

Well for the fastest speeds you can do raid 0. The problem is though if your running on raid 0 if any drive go's out then you will lose all the information on it. Where in raid 5 if any one drive went out you can rebuild the array off the other 3 disks and not lose any data. So it can go faster but the question you should ask is is it worth losing the added security for my data. So it's a tradeoff either way.

How does Raid1 compare to Raid0 for download speed and multitasking?

Dustrega

RAID 0 is slightly faster since there is no redundancy.
