I have a Buffalo Terrastation which has errors on the drive as noted in the daily device emails.  I have already purchased a drive to replace it from Buffalo. However, the device never turns on the red light above the drive so I don't know when I can replace it.

Is it alright to shut down the machine, change the drive out and then turn it back on?

Thank you,
Eric

I am having trouble identifying the model. It is at least 5 years old. 4 3GB disks, TeraStation ISCI Service network storage. The System information page just tells the serial number. My bid from my third part provider from 2012 says:
Terastation III ISCSI 12 TB 4x3TB SATA 1u RM Raid 0/1/5/10 3YR

Does that get me anywhere?

Yes.

I'm assuming you have a backup. If you do not have a backup, make one.

Disconnect your iSCSI initiator from that OS's tool.

Gracefully shut the unit down. Remove the bad drive.

Reboot the unit with the drive out. Wait for the unit to complain that the array is degraded. Put the replacement drive in. at some point, the LCD will say that new disc is ready press func to rebuild.

Press the function key until it beeps once.

Unit will chew on it and eventually go to rebuilding.

**A single copy of data, even on a RAID array, is NOT a backup! Hard drive failure is not a question of IF, but WHEN! Don't take my word for it, take Google's!**
