Terastation HD-H1.0TGL/R5 RAID5 rebuild problem

I have a Terastation Model HD-H1.0TGL/R5. I set it up as RAID5. I recently had drive #4 fail (red access light for drive 4). I installed an unformatted Western Digital WD2500AAJB (identical to the existing drives). However, when I use the web interface to rebuild the RAID, I hear a drive spinning down and then up again multiple times along with occasional drive heads moving into park. I'm assuming that sound is coming from the drive I just installed. The RAID rebuild fails and then automatically starts again. The Diag light blinks red continuously during rebuild. When the rebuild fails, I see either a steady green or red Access light for drive 4. Because the "new" drive was manufactured in 2012, but has been stored in my house in the sealed static bag, I'm not sure if the "new" drive is good or not.

I had a drive fail 5 years ago and when I installed the same part number drive, the rebuild worked perfectly. I don't recall if I had to do a format on the disk though. I no longer have any PC with an IDE interface, so I can't connect to the "new" drive and investigate whether it can be formatted or whether Disk Check finds any errors.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I really don't want to lose the data on my NAS.
