RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

Buffalo LinkStation Mini

Model# LS-WS500GL/R1

Firmware: 1.04

Configured for RAID1

In the browser config Disk Backup you can schedule backup jobs, and in Disk Mgmt > RAID Setup you can schedule a Raid Scanning job.  If the LinkStation power switch is set to Auto, and the drive is currently sleeping, will it wake up to perform these jobs?  Or will it perform them immediately upon its next wakeup?  Or will it completely skip the jobs when asleep?

It wakes as soon as it gets the keep alive packets from the computer

Thanks.

If a backup job or Raid Scan was scheduled during the sleep time -- will it perform them immediately upon awakening?  Or will they just be skipped?

Wow, that's not a "feature!"

The point to scheduled backups is that they can happen with or without the intervention of any of the computers on the network.  I have the peace of mind of knowing that whatever I happen to be doing at 3:00am doesn't have any bearing on whether or not my NAS is quietly backing itself up to the attached USB drive.

...at least that's how it works for the models without auto sleep.

On the other hand, if I had an auto-sleep model set to auto-sleep mode, those nightly backups would get skipped unless I happen to leave a computer on the network turned on all night long.  This saves power?

The smart way to handle backups that are scheduled during a time when the drive is auto-asleep would be to either have it wake up and perform the backup, or perform it immediately upon waking after the missed time-slot.

But since I don't actually have an 'auto-sleep' enabled NAS, this is just my two cents worth.

Indeed it would be fabulous if Auto sleep mode maintained a timer to wake up for scheduled tasks, then resume sleep.  It would need to send a wakeup signal to other LinkStations on the subnet if they are the backup target.

Auto sleep mode not only saves power, it assures greater reliability and longevity of the drive.  For me this Buffalo replaces a file server pc which was on 24/7 for a year and a half -- and whose performance degraded noticeably after a year.
