I have a Linkstation Pro LS-1000GL.   I set up FTP and my router to forward ports 20 and 21 to the NAS.   That part seems fine.  But when I tried to connect with an FTP client (try FTP.EXE, IE, Firefox, and CuteFTP), I can't list the content of my share.  Here are the errors that I get on CuteFTP:

[L] 220 192.168.10.10 FTP server ready

[L] 331 Password required for admin.
[L] PASS (hidden)

Can anyone please help?  TIA.

According to the info in the error log, it appears as though you're logging in as admin. Try creating another user on the Linkstation (in gui, User Management -> Add) and logging in with those credentials, or as guest with no password.

When I use a user that I created (who has full read/write rights to the folders), I get error 530 Login incorrect.  Yes, I double-checked the password.   I can map to the share via LAN using the same user/pass.

Any other thoughts?

Don't know why - but I create another user.   Now I can log into FTP with that user, but still get the same error 500.   I did make sure that the user has read/write permission to a folder with FTP support enabled.

I just tested it on mine. I created a fresh user; Try ftping using ftp.exe; easiest to get a log off of.

Alot of the clients tend to act kind of funny, to be honest. I've run into quite a few that tend to cause problems. See if you're running in passive or active mode, as well. That usually makes a difference. Passive mode won't work properly with these devices alot of the time, unfortunately.

Methodology: I created a new user named test, and a share named test. FTP service was enabled. I then logged into the device using a my linux box, and the basic shell ftp command.  I ran an 'ls' command successfully, and was able to download files using the get command.

Thanks for all the ideas.

With windows ftp.exe, got the same 500 error, followed by a 425 error - unable to build data connection: connection refused.

I tried both CuteFTP and FlashFXP, with passive mode on and off.  All got the same result.  So I am pretty sure it's the NAS config.

Here are my config steps in LS Pro:

1. Created a new user named testuser

2. Create a share named FTP, with FTP service enabled, granted testuser read/write permission

So I am at a loss as to what could be wrong.
