Hello, I have been using a HD-CE500U2 unit for a year with no problems. However now when i connect my unit to my windows xp based pc, it installs the driver and says it is ready to use. But when you go into my computer the unit does not appear. I have checked this unit on another pc same problem. I checked the device manager it SHOWS the buffalo unit and says the device and drivers are working correctly but i just cannot access it. Does anyone know why windows installed it and says its working but i just cannot get to any of the 100gb data i have already on it. PLEASE HELP!!

THANKS

Anyone know how to fix this? I am having the same problem myself.

Well there are a few things you can check on it. First is how it shows up in disk management (right click my computer click manage select disk management). It should show up on the bottom there and show how much space it has and how its partitioned. Unfortunately with that option though sometimes the only real fix is a reformat (which of course will clear the data). Also if its possible the data directeries are orphaned you could go into the command line (start run cmd) and try doing a chkdsk /r on the drive letter to see if it can reconnect any broken paths.

Cheers

   How do you format it?

The drive should appear in Disk Management on the lower right-hand side (Disk0 is your built in drive, so it will likely be Disk1 or Disk2 etc.). If it shows up as healthy (Blue border) you should be able to right-click on that are and tell it to pick a drive letter.

To reformat, you would right-click on the colored area and choose New Partition and choose the formate as NTFS. Again, be warned that a reformat will delete any data in the drive.
