RAID is not a replacement for a backup! Here's why.

Brief History:

Unit was working fine until last week, when it booted into EM mode for no discernable reason.

Call to tech support confirmed that firmware update to 1.09 was recommended, which was accomplished without issue.

I decided to change the RAID configuration from 0 to 1, so I backed up data, and made the switch.

After the switch, GUI would not recognize password, so I did a hard reset to "admin" "password"

GUI would still not recognize "password" but firmware utility would.

Attempting to put unit in EM mode by pressing reset button while applying power failed repeatedly.

After countless logon attempts, new password finally worked as mysteriously as it stopped working.

Attempting to move data back onto linkstation failed when the system lost communication with NAS

Received a message E23 from Navigator that disk 1 had been removed from array due to errors.(Funny how it worked fine with RAID 0, which is completely intolerant of disk errors)

Next message l11 "bad sectors had reached emergency level

Next message l12 degraded mode (degraded is an understatement. It was completely unuseable at this point, and would not respond to pressing the power button to shut down.)

Next message l17 re synch raid array, which ended with a warning that the array must be rebuilt.

I elected to rebuild the array, which has been running now for over 48 hours on a pair of 500GB drives. No other functions are accessible within the GUI other than telling me the rebuild is in progress, but it still shows the original used space as if nothing has happened.

This is where I'm at now. So far I have resisted the temptation to pull the plug on it. I have 2 weeks left on my warranty.

Dustrega

Contact our tech support again and we'll setup an RMA for a faulty drive. Did it indicate which HDD was getting bad sectors?
