Using external USB dis with Linkstation Live

Hi

I have a 500GB Linkstation Live (HD501LJ) with an external Buffalo 250 GB  USB drive plugged in to USB1. This all works fine (I had to reformat the external drive to EXT format).

This kit is not easily accessible (on hands and knees in small awkward cupboard under the stairs!) and as it all works well this is not a major problem. But I sometimes need to restart the Linkstation as the odd file is held 'open' and can't be accessed; this is easy I just use the web browser and tell it to restart.

The 'problem' is that after the restart I cannot access the files on the attached USB drive without physically scrabbling in the under stairs cupboard and manually switching the power to the USB drive off and then back on. Does anyone have a way of restarting the attached USB drive using a simple software based option?

Sorry but the loss of power to the USB attached storage sounds like it doesn't have an AUTO power function. What model is the USB drive?

Hi

The docs that came with it state it is a HD-HBU2 and it is 250MB capacity.

If you need more detail I will have to undertake an expedition into the darkest depths of the understairs cupboard!

Thanks

I think that information will suffice. I think what's happening is that the older external USB device is not able to interpret the signalling sent from the newer generation NAS. What firmware is the device running and the model number of the NAS doesn't make much sense either. Could you re-post this information please?

Hi

I've just checked both pieces of equipment and the labels give the following infromation:

NAS model No. H8-DH500GL

USB disk model No. HD-HB250U2-EU

The NAS web interface screens state Firmware version 2.10

I cannot see a firmware version for the USB disk, and I do not know how to find this information.

Also somewhat confusing is the info the NAS shows about the two USB devices (or should I say confused)

USB disk 1 shows as a Buffalo device with no disk capacity or format

USB disk 2 shows as a Canon 610 series with a capacity of (notionally) 250GB

The Canon is a printer and the Buffalo is a disk of 250GB! Despite the mix up in the manufacturer and model info for the display details both devices, they are both working fine!

Hope this all helps pinpoint what may be the problem and any possible potential solution.

Thanks

Jeff
