Hi.

I brought a LinkStation LS-VL in the hope of using it simply as a shared storage device at my home network while saving power when I'm not using it. Yet, I've been unable to find a way that's satisfieding to my needs, and I'm starting to give up and thinking of finding another product from another brand, sadly.

What I want >

1.

Powersaving option. When I'm not accessing my LS-VL I want it to go to sleep after some time.

Okay, so with the LS-VL on 'AUTO' the powersaving feature is set to 3 mins (10 minutes would have been better). Okay, it's very short and not ajustable (without root and scripting knowledge. This is beyong me to work out), but I can live with this, I suppose.

2.

I want my device to wake up (and stay up until a period of inactivity) when I acesss it via Windows under 'network'. E.g. sreaming a film from it. Yet, Windows doesn't wake the NAS up this way, nor keep it staying up.

I know about WOL and 'AUTO' mode, but how's WOL going to help me? I can wake the device via my router, but it'll shutdown again soon. Keeping the device on 'ON' is a huge waste of energy. Shutdown/wakeup timers are extreme inflexible, and still a huge waste of energy. The NAS navigator program cannot wake up, nor prevent the LS-VL from shutting down.

Sigh, we're talking about the single most important -but basic feature (imo)- that all NAS devices should be able to deal it.

Please tell me that I'm mistaken, and that the LS-VL is better than this, somehow. Or are all NAS devices likewise? I can hardly believe this, tho.

*update

So, I found how that the newest NAS navigator doesn't work for the LS-VL, it seems. I installed the older version instead (whish has LS-VL in its name), and now the service and NAS Navigator keeps the LS-VL up when the PC is on.

Thoughts on this, list which products are compatible with the respective versions of NAS navigator when you install it. Also, the description for NAS Navigator should state that it's used to keep the connection active between the PC and NAS. Also, an option for the NAS to sleep when the PC sleeps would be logical. AS is, it seems the NAS only shutsdown when the PC itself shutsdown (I could wrong but it seems the case).
