I don't understand the folder connect and folder link options on the nasnavi2. of course it would help if it wasn't in japanese. These are the only items in japanese as far as i have found. can anyone explain?

Also, having issues with FTP. I am not an experienced networking person, but i do have a vpn set up to a ftp site at this time, no problem. I have configured the lynksys rt31p2 router every way possible and have had some luck getting it to recognize and ask for pw, but then IE and firefox both say can't do it. Since I am able to ftp out isn't that on 20? so Comcast could still be sticking it to me on 21? how can i find out?

ok, i found out a few things on the FTP portion....canyouseeme says my isp is not blocking and everthing is cool. I enabled my log on my router and tried to ftp and it shows no requests coming from me........

The point is to do it step by step. Before you try from outside make sure it works in your local network. Open the web interface, go to shared folder/ service setup and make sure FTP is activated. Go to shared folders setup click on one unrestricted folder(no user/pw) and make sure FTP is activated (tic)

Now try to tye ftp://[IP of LS Quad]
This should show info and array1, open array1, open the folder. Does it work?

OK, For access from outside forward port 21 in your router to the LinkStation IP. From router to router it looks a little different. On a Buffalo router it says Gaming ports (for what reason ever) but usually it says port forwarding. You can not test the outside access from your own network. You need to go somewhere else and use ftp://[router IP] The router IP is the one you get from ISP, not the internal 192.168.xxx.xxx or whatever you use for the LAN. Usually you find it on the status page of the router configuration. If that works better don't leave the ftp open, specify user name and password. For some reason IE is not a very good FTP client if it comes to restricted access. Firefox or Opera is recommended. Way of access is ftp://[user]:[password]@[router IP] more secure is without password, type it in after a box pops up. Hope it helps

I greatly appreciate your help, I had been there and used firefox to check it. I am getting much better results since I flashed my router and installed dd-wrt 24 SP1. It configured right up and I'll check it out tomorrow. What ftp client are you using? My station is set up as a central access and back-up (or trying anyway) for a small businees where everyone can get the files they need and save them. webacess kinda sucks for that, but we are getting by. Most of my helpers aren't that comuter literate and i'm looking for the easist way for them to save files. Maybe even VPN? Most of them can use explorer well.

Still no one knows why the nas navi2 panel folder sync panel is in japanese?

I use FileZilla - works very well. You can manage connections and export the settings and use it for other clients as well if you want. (import the xml file) For FTP you don't need VPN and to be honest I found it difficult to set up a VPN server in DD-WRT (or maybe I'm not as bright as I think :-D) but it should be possible. By the way via VPN you don't even need FTP because everyone connected via VPN can use all resources of the destination network including the Windows sharing. It is not difficult to do port forwarding and FTP and I think it is more secure if it is not only for your colleagues. (sometimes it is in use for customers/clients) Nobody gives strangers access to the network. So if your intension is just providing files I would recommend the FTP solution. I used it for a long time (WHR-HP-G54DD and LS Live) and it worked perfectly. With the panel in NASNAvi2 - no haven't heard of. I will have a look. Lets do one after another.

well, i'm looking at a little more than just providing files. We have huge directories of image and video files and the easier I make it for these babies to save their data in the proper location, the more likely it is to occur correctly. If when they hit save there is an option to just save it hwere it goes, shouldn't be an issue, if they have to go back later and upload, it'll be hit and miss.

I THINK I"M TURNING JAPANESE!

Hi, it shouldn't be that hard. Create folders in the web UI with different user names and passwords and they can't go anywhere else. Unfortunately it is not possible to have sub folders with fifferent access rights. And I totally agree. Using web access for it sucks. So this is why you look for synchronising folders. I'm from Europe and in our NAS Navi I found a function for creating a short cut for a share on the desktop (what works) but nothing what points to synchronising folders. Synchronising (offline folders) would work only if you use the VPN solution. For this japanese part, could you provide the version and some more details like the Windows version or Mac? THX

I have all the folders and acess down, i just can't make that outside connection for some reason. That's when i started looking at the folder connect and sync options on the nasnavi2 v2.15 to see if there was a solution there.I'm on vista x86 premium if that helps

Hi. the screenshot is invisible for me but appears for you because you linked content on your computer.

As I wrote for access from outside you need the router IP. Basically there are 2 ways: a static IP from your provider or a dynamic DNS service. Static IP is the easy way but usually it involves additional costs for it. No issue, you always know how to reach the server. (or the router)

The second way is more work and no costs. One of the oldest and most popular services is dyndns.org. Go there and get a account. Write the hostname, user name and password down. Open the router configuration, internet and DDNS. Fill in the details and save it. Now, no matter what IP you get from the ISP you can reach your network with ftp://my-pretty.url.net or what ever you choose.
