I've done a lot of searching here and haven't found a specific answer so apologies if this topic has been covered before.

I have a Terrastation for quite a few years now and one of the drives has gone bad. I didn't lose a ton of data but I backed up the remaining data and figured it was time to upgrade the four 250GB drives with 500GB drives I have lying around. This is where I run into the problems. First off the terrastation works at the moment and I can access the unit and the data that remains on the three working drives. I figured I would just power off the unit and remove the old drives and insert the 500GB drives then power the unit back on and format the new ones using NASNAVIGATOR.

The problem is when I powered up the unit with the 500GB drives installed the unit gives me the E06 "Lost BOOT image" message. So after doing some searches I come across this thread: http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=10182.0

I went through the various steps and although I was able to get the TFTP.EXE utility to talk to the unit I could never get the it run in EM mode. It started to to go into EM mode then would go back to the E06 message.

I have to admit that I'm an armchair IT enthusiast and a lot of concepts are lost on me but I do know how to search for a solution and read through to a solution in most cases. This one has me baffled though, I can't find a definitive guide to installing new drives on this particular model and the manual didn't help much either.

Can anyone here point me in the right direction on this.

My particular unit's model # is: HS-DH0.0TGL/RS

The drives I'd like to use are all identical and the model # is: WD5000ABYS-0TNA0 (Western Digital). I should also add that these drives are used but otherwise work. They came out of a much larger disk array. Is it possible that the old data on the drives may be the culprit? Do I need to format the drives before installing them?

I think my basic problem is that I'm just going about the process completely wrong, but if anyone could help out I would greatly appreciate it.

Since getting the E06 message I've re-installed the old 250GB drives and aside from the one bad drive it works just like normal

OK after some more searching and reading not to mention double checking (which I know tech forum users appreciate) I determined the problem and resolved the issue. It turns out that the while the TFTP software appeared to be working yesterday it was in fact the wrong version. Apparently I had grabbed the HS-DHGL 2.10exe when I needed the HS-DHTGL 2.13exe.

So if you have this model and are experiencing this problem MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT TFTP software.

In the end I was able to get the unit up and running with the larger 500GB drives and I'm now copying my backups to my twice larger Terrastation! And to add I didn't even have to ask how to change the language from Japanese to English. One more thing to add the truth is out there....... if you look hard enough. ;)
