LS-WTGL not starting

I had to replace the drives on my linkstation as one of them failed, i followed the em boot procedure and it tried to do a firmware update but kept failing waiting for the nas to respond to the restart at the end. After several unsuccessful attempts i gave up and brought it in to work to try it on an XP machine instead of windows 7, now however it won't boot into em mode, as soon as the power plug is plugged in the  disk access light starts flashing (before the unit is even turned on) and doesn't stop. I've tried holding down the reset switch while booting, nothing, the green light at the bottom just keeps flashing.
I've tried different drives but it does the same thing. Any ideas?
