I was wondering what the Buffalo Nas Key's purpose is? I know its mandatory in the configuration, but why?

Do you mean in the Web Access tab? It is merely a unique identifier that is used when you register your NAS with BuffaloNAS.com. It's a password of sorts that is used during the connection process. It helps ensure that you are connecting from your device and not somebody else that just knows the name you used.
