Access restrictions on a Terastation 3400d0804?

Hello,

We have set-up this Terastation and it works great except for a few things we are trying to get it to do.

We don't have an active directory...and we wanted to use the Terastation control panel to assign user/passwords for any folder on the NAS server. It looks like you can only assign user/passwords to the "shares" that are on the root level. Unfortunately for me, my coworkers require the ability to set passwords on any folder, even if it is deep within the directory.

I see that there is an option to get it to join a domain. I am working on setting up a sandboxed Samba server on Linux to see if this would work....but the manual makes it seem like even if you integrate with your active directory, you can only assign password/user restrictions to the root-level shares.

I need to know 2 things:

-If joined to a Domain, will the NAS let me edit permissions with Windows for any folder within any share, no matter how deep in the directory?

-If so, would a Samba server on Linux work as the domain controller/active directory?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can edit sub-level permissions even if your part of a domain. There is a option to delegate authority to SMB server. This might work but other then that you will have to telnet in to the unit and do STUFF lol to get it to work. If so best bet is nas-central.com
Units I own: TS-XL, TS-WXL, LS-WVL, TS-RXL,  TS5400, TS-RVHL,

I don't work for Buffalo but i do love there products enough to help people

I read through the manual again and saw the part about delegating authority to smb server...but it appears that even if I bought another Terastation and delegated authority to it, that the only access restrictions I can set are for root level shares. If anyone has a workaround to set access restrictions to non-root level shares or a method using the Terastation control panel I would much appreciate it. Or if someone can confirm that this isn't possible it will save me a lot of time in sandboxing/testing. I would have thought having comprehensive access restrictions for the entire directory would be something everyone wants in a NAS.....so I'm holding out hope that someone else has tried getting their NAS set-up like this.

The only A/R you can set are on the root level of a particular share, there is no work around.
