Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a Buffalo 421e NAS frame with a few WD Red drives, however I wanted to ask about remote connectivity.

I'm not keen on the idea of going through the NAS's internal web server to access files, so I want to setup the NAS as a network share. However, as the NAS will be hosted on my domestic internet connection, the IP is subject to change every once in a while. Is it possible for the NAS to broadcast its external access IP to a location which in turn relays that IP address to the network share config on my Mac/PC? I want to be able to access the NAS remotely in the same way that I would access lets say 'My Documents' locally. I'm used to browsing my MP3's via a folder where I can just double click on what I want, I don't like the idea of going through a web page. I understand MP3's and videos will still need to buffer, but that's fine.

I don't want to run a VPN server as it negates the point of buying the NAS in the first place, the idea of this is a low power consumption solution that is geared towards storing larger files, saving read/write cycles on my SSD and giving my family/friends access to my films/music etc.

EDIT: After googling around it appears Buffalo have their own form of DNS service which the Linkstation talks to, however I've only seen the internal web server work through this, is there any reason CIFS/SMB wouldn't also work through this? So for example could I map its domain name as a network drive (e.g. smb://my-nas.buffalonas.com) or at the very least through a third party DNS (e.g. smb://my-nas.dyndns.com)?

If anyone could suggest any ideas or let me know if this is possible I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.
