New to the forum and NAS

Hi, my name is Rich and I just joined the forum. I am relatively new to NAS and have tried to other methods (systems) over the past few months and both have failed. My first try was with my Netgear router with a hard drive (internal). I had set up the router/nas to store my dvd's so that I could access them over the internet. I set up the private cloud account that I was supposed to use to access my router over the internet, I could see the router and the drive where the dvd's were stored only I could not access it. Netgear blamed it on windows 7 security not allowing me access.  I was able to view the dvd's over my network at home. Next I tried WD, same type of setup where I would store DVD's on the WD set up a n account to be able to access it over the internet, that did not work. WD blamed it on Windows 7 security and Norton. My computer did not have to be on for me to access these devices since they are attached to the router.

I decided to go with the Buffalo Linkstation Live LS-XLC61, I have installed the software and the linkstartion is attached to my router (Netgear WNDR4700 if that matters). I need to find out how do I put my dvd's on the drive, and how to access the dvd's over the internet and on my smartphone.
Do the linkstation users use XBMC to store and organize you dvd's with the artwork? All I see on my linkstation network drives are files and the will not open.

Hope someone can help me, please feel free to email me if you like, I think I set it up correctly. If the linkstation does not work out for me, I still have two weeks in which I can return it, but I would really like this to work.
