Try updating to 1.07, then in the web interface, try resetting it to defaults from Maintenance->Initialization, Restore.

The seller probably means to do Start->Run, type in \\ip_address_of_linkstation, then hit ok.

The manual is on the CD image located here: http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/?LSCHL-103WR_Win.zip -- It's a big file, but it's in there.

i've tried putting the ip in start/run, but it just comes up with "the network path was not found"

the seller said something about reconfiguring my nas to match the network, but surely if i can access the settings screen on the nas, i should be able to view the files?!

Colin is right I would recommend updating the firmware of your NAS and then initializing the unit just to be certain. Also, check and make sure your file and printer sharing is enabled. Since you're able to access the web admin page you're right in the assumption that you should be able to access the file system. If your file and print sharing on your computer (assuming you're running XP or Vista) is enabled then a firmware update is most likely what is necessary.
