Installed VISTA 32 bit but can't log onto my TerraStation shares ?

Hi,

 

I installed VISTA 32 bit but can't access my shared (via a TeraStation) data anymore.

 

- I can log onto the CPANEL via Explorer without isssues

- If I scan the network and it immediately finds the TeraStation

  - I can click the TeraStation and see the two shares Array1 and Array2 (2 times two HDs in a raid configuration)

    - When I try to login I get the login dialog and I enter the user name and password in CPanel / User Management / admin ....

       This always fails and Windows asks me to enter again suggesting the login or password is wrong.

 

Same problems when I try to map a drive letter to Array1 or Array2

Same problems when I try RUN and then \\Terastation I get to see the Arrays, but can't login

Same problem when I try RUN \\IP address of Terastation

 

All works just fine on my XP system ?  But I need to get this working soon on this VISTA machine.

I think I can answer my own question.

I tried this, that I read in this forum:

Causes: Vista defaults to only send the more secure NTLMv2 protocol, which these NAS devices / Samba do not support.

Fixes: Go to Start -> Run -> "secpol.msc". Then go to Local Policies -> Security Options. Find "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level". Change the setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Save the setting and then reboot the computer.

And that WORKED

Windows Vista does indeed have that issue with our older NAS products. The new ARM-based devices have an updated version of Samba that supports NTLMv2, so on all of the NAS products we've come out with in the past few years do not require the change to work with Vista. The following is a list of products that requires the security level change for compatibility with Windows Vista:

 

IDE-disk based Terastations (HD-Hx.xTGL/R5 and HS-Dx.xTGL/R5)

Original Terastation Pro (TS-x.xTGL/R5)

IDE-disk based Linkstations (HD- models)

 

Newer devices such as Terastation Pro II, Terastation Live, Linkstation Pro, and Linkstation Live all support Windows Vista without the need for the security level change.

The above seems a little odd - it implies that older Terastations such as mine do not support NTLM2. Not only that, but Microsoft say that NTLM2 was supported by default from XP onwards, including Vista.

 

However in my case enabling NTLM 2 (not 1) support in Vista was the answer for me (which suggests Vista Home Premium does not have NTLM2 enabled - a little odd, and that my Terastation already supported it). I have the latest 2.0.16 firmware, so perhaps that has the newer software included.

 

Whatever the reality the following worked for me.

 

It turns out secpol.msc is only included in Vista Ultimate and Business (and you can't copy it across either apparently). Vista Home users will need to find the registry settings to change manually, or use a tool such as "Ultimate Windows Tweaker" to change the setting.

In this software, you will find the setting under the "Network Optimisation" tab ('Enable NTLM 2 support').

That is odd that enabling NTLM version 2 helped make your unit connectable.  Typically Vista has NTLM1 completely disabled by default, which can cause connectivity to both our products and MacOS X-based computers as well.  We do keep a patch on our site that you can run on a vista computer to make the appropriate registry changes automatically.

One thing I noticed is that you can do all the registry settings and install the patch and whatever you find...just like i did...but there is also another setting that has to be set - either in XP or Vista

 

This is for Wired Ethernet Connections. You will need to repeat the steps if you also use Wireless - just select the Wireless network connection instead of the Local Area Connection.

 

In Vista:

Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel

Go to Network and Sharing Center - select Manage Network Connections.

On Local Area Connection – right click and select Properties

Click Continue on UAC prompt.

Select TCP/IPv4 and click on Properties.

Click on Advanced.

Click on WINS tab.

In the NetBIOS setting, select "Default" option.

 

In XP:

Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel

Go to Network Connections

On Local Area Connection – right click and select Properties

Select TCP/IP and click on Properties.

Click on Advanced.

Click on WINS tab.

In the NetBIOS setting, select "Default" option.

 

Remember, If you also use wireless and/or wired network access, righ click on the choice or repeat the process for each that you use.
