I am running Vista with a QUAD v1.05.  Drive is mapped.  Single user no other devices sharing this NAS.  I have no access restrictions setup.  I found when I edit files using PhotoShop CS4 and save them it sometimes gives me this message (file is already in use) and the file is gone.  I can't see the file from the NAS using the drive map or \\nas1\photos\dir.

Now if I try and copy the file back from my backup I cannot.  It says please remove the write protection.  I rebooted the NAS and Vista and I can recreate this problem.  It's like the file is hidden or something.  I used total commander to view the directory (shows hidden files) and the files(s) are not there yet it won't let me copy them back.

This is odd, I also have a Linux server in the house.  I created a Samba share and was able to re-create the problem on Samba also.  It seems when I open the photo via ACDSee Pro (control-E) which is configured to edit via PhotoShop is where the problem is.  So it's not the Buffalo.

gquiring,

I noticed you're accessing the NAS via NetBIOS name in both cases. Did you try accessing it directly by IP address? (i.e. "\\[IPAddressofNAS" in the Run command for windows) Sometimes accessing the IP address is the only way to clear up name resolution issues such as this.

To my surprise that works.  I repeated the same steps 6 times and cannot create the problem.  I found the only way to get files back on the NAS were to disconnect the share and reconnect and that allowed me restore the missing files.

Can you explain more on why the name resolution is a problem?  Would using a WINS server help?
