LS-Q4.0TL/R5 - red light flashes seven times

Hi all,

I recently was given a Linkstation Quad which should have 4.0TB of disks but the enclosures are empty.

I wanted to find out if the unit is working, so I took a working SATA HD of 160Gb and added it to bay 1.

When I switch on the machine, I get a flashing blue light for a few seconds, then seven red flashes and the fans come on.

I thought from reading online that this was OK and that I could TFTP boot and update the machine to get it working, however this doesn't seem to be the case.

When I try to TFTP boot, I get the 'Listening On: 192.168.11.1:69' message and 'accepting requests..' but nothing else happens.

My question is, firstly is the problem because I don't have all four drives, or because of the format of the disk? I don't think so, because it does the same with no disks.

Secondly, can anyone explain how to get this working or if it is possible?

Thanks in advance, your help is really appreciated!

Hmm, I have half answered my own question - the disk was faulty! I swapped with another and I can now TFTP boot. I tried to update firmware but now I get ACP_STATE_FAILURE when it tries to format the drive. I removed all partitions from it on a desktop PC but the result is still the same. Do I need to manually partition the drive?
