Buffalo Linkstation Live LSCH 1.0TL NAS, using Windows 7 with an attached external Seagate 2TB hard drive.

Im trying to attach the external hard drive directly to the NAS via USB to backup the files on the NAS. Nothing new there - after all thats what its designed to do right? Unfortunately its not that simple...

The Linkstation can see the drive (Seagate) via IP and Navigator but cannot format it, in any format. It keeps failing.

There is nothing wrong with the Seagate - it works fine - I can format it through Windows.

Bufallo Support are trying to help but they dont know how to resolve what should be a very simple matter.

It seems apparent the only way this might work is if the external drive is formatted as XFS. However Buffalo have not provided this as an option.

Any advice or answers on how to proceed will be most welcome!

In the mean time Im in the process of downloading a Linux operating system since it appears to offer the means format drives in XFS.

Linux however is an utter headache even thought Ive found UNetbootin to simplify its download, install and operation.

As for actually formatting in XFS, still working on it.
