MacBook Air - Thunderbolt drive (HD-PATU3) ejects by itself

I have a brand new 1.0TB MiniStation portable HDD. It works perfectly when connected via USB, but when I connect it to my MacBook Air using Thunderbolt, the drive unmounts/ejects itself after a minute or two and I receive a "the disk was not ejected properly..." error message. 

 

Has anyone else seen this issue?

yeah me, you had any luck?  I think it's the cable coz I've got the software update, I'll try a copper cable.

copper cable didn't improve things

researched on the web and it seems there's no solution, it's a crappy drive, have to stick with the usb connection

I am having the same issue, with the drive connected via a brand new Apple 27" Thunderbolt display.  Occasionally the drive is ejected and I get the error message that it was not ejected properly.  The cable is also very hot.  Any updates on this issue?  Do I need a new TB cable?  Thanks.

Details:  1TB drive, HD-PA1.0TU3, MacBook Pro 15" Retina, OS X Mavericks 10.9.4
