Using Acronis

I use Acronis for my back-ups.  I cant get an answer from them for some reason so I hope someone here can help.  I saw someone here post this:

 

Local PC backups on the 1st of the month (staggering the times) and user directories at 3am daily on Windows 7 PC's, using Acronis backup software.

 

Now, can you tell me if your PC's have to be awake to do the monthly backups?  I think so as I have tried to do this and it wont happen unless the PC is "awake".  Also, what is the user directories you are backing up and why do you do this?  Maybe I should?
