I'm having some problems with my LS-CHL 1.0TB. It has worked fine for almost a year and has now started to report "DISC NOT FOUND" errors on my daily status email.

The disc is working normally, and is visible over the network.

I called Buffalo Tech, who said that it need a firmware update, as it's on v1.10

I've downloaded the latest version (1.34) and disabled firewall etc, but when I run the firmware update tool it 1) finds the nas drive, 2) I press "update", 3) it asks for my password, 4) which I enter, then it shows a progress bar, very briefly, stating "Searching" like it did before step one. I'm then back to the start, with  the update not performed.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The disk could be on the verge of failure (dependent on usage).  I would recommend backing up your data if you haven't already.  You could also try booting the unit to http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-1-of-5-EM-Mode-boot-procedures-please-read-this/td-p/11008" target="_self" rel="nofollow">EM mode and attempt a http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-2-of-5-Force-Firmware-update-procedure-please-read-this/td-p/11011" target="_self" rel="nofollow">force firmware update.
